Dominguez will face off against Susan Hays on the November ballot
Presidio County

Ida Dominguez — a Presidio County native who has lived in Marfa for 35 years and wife of Sheriff Danny Dominguez — has filed as a write-in candidate to challenge Susan Hays, the Democratic nominee for the Precinct 4 county commissioner seat in the November General Election.
Hays is an attorney and former 2022 candidate for the state agriculture commissioner who ran unopposed as the Democratic Party nominee in March. The seat was held by David Beebe, who inadvertently had to relinquish the seat before it expired after running afoul of state law in his bid for county judge. Beebe lost the primary to County Judge Joe Portillo, who ultimately appointed Frank “Buddy” Knight to the position. Knight indicated all along that he would not be seeking the seat in the election. No Republicans ran in the primary for the post.
“I actually contemplated [running] earlier this year,” Dominguez said, but she said she decided to hold off when her husband was facing some uncertain medical conditions. “I had some people encourage me, and I decided I was going to go ahead and do it.”
Although she said she doesn’t have any direct political experience, she has followed the county operations carefully over the years, particularly since her husband has been sheriff for almost 30 years. “I have kept up with what’s going on,” she said. “I like people, and I like to connect with people. I want to be their voice.”
Dominguez acknowledged that being a write-in candidate can be a challenge. “It’s really hard as a write-in for someone to win,” she said. “I understand that, but I’m not losing anything by giving it a try.”
