The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), El Paso District, working together with Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) will temporarily close the U.S. 67/HWY 90 railroad bridge in Alpine to complete a bridge-raising project aimed at improving safety and preventing future bridge strikes.
The bridge has been the recipient of ongoing trucks crashing their tops into it. The project will have UPRR crews raise the bridge clearance from 13 feet 7 inches to 14 feet 3 inches, enhancing safety for vehicles traveling through the area and reducing the risk of striking the bridge.
The 24-hour closure, affecting both eastbound and westbound traffic, will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, and ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 13.
The closure will impact direct access through Alpine. Drivers should plan for the following detours:
- Commerce traffic traveling eastbound to Alpine and traffic coming from Presidio, will be detoured to SH 17 to Fort Davis then SH 118 to Alpine or SH 223 to avoid the underpass.
- Commerce traffic traveling westbound to Alpine will be detoured to SH 118 or SH 223 to Fort Davis then SH 17 to Marfa to avoid the underpass.
Motorists are asked to plan ahead, expect delays, and follow all posted detours and construction signs.
