PRESIDIO — At around 9:49 a.m. on Friday morning, Presidio ISD Police received reports of gunshots being heard from west of the elementary school. The school went into an emergency shelter-in-place while the school police department, the City of Presidio Police and Presidio County Sheriff’s Office investigated.
Personnel were quickly able to determine the source of the shots and lifted the shelter-in-place order. PISD Chief Joel Nuñez took to Facebook to assure parents and staff members that all was clear. “There was no threat to our schools or students this morning,” he wrote.
Discharging a firearm within city limits is illegal, but Presidio Police Department Chief Adan “Pugi” Covos explained that the sounds were coming from a Customs and Border Patrol firing range outside of town. The cool, windy morning caught the echo. “It’s a clear day and the sound carried,” he said.
Covos also said that a “shelter-in-place” order is different from a lockdown order in that teachers are able to continue carrying out instruction, adding minimal disruption and anxiety to the school day. All local law enforcement, including Customs and Border Protection, train together regularly to be prepared for an actual active shooter situation.
