The Lady Horns volleyball squad fell in four sets to the Van Horn Eagles on Tuesday. After a tough battle, Coach Melissa Firmin had this to say: “I am extremely proud of our girls. The effort, hustle, toughness and heart they showed on the court tonight were exactly what we want to see. If we continue to clean up our missed serves and compete with that same intensity, I believe we can beat anyone in our district and compete for a district championship. These girls are working hard, they’re hungry, and they’re starting to see what they’re capable of.”
The Marfa junior high and varsity football teams hit the road last night for a tough matchup against the Fort Hancock Mustangs, walking away with a varsity win at the half. The game was cut short due to lightning, and the varsity Horns came home with their second win of the season, making them 2-0. Junior Austin McGary scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run. Bubba Marquez scored with a 10-yard pass from Austin McGary and again later in the night with an amazing 80-yard kickoff return as Aidyn Alvarez ran through the defense giving Bubba the opening he needed to score. The final score was 20-18. Coach Reyes said: “It was another tough game with penalties for loss of yardage against us, which got Fort Hancock back in the game. We have to control the game and not let the penalties get the best of us.”
Earlier in the evening, the Junior High Shorthorns put together a strong performance on both sides of the ball. Despite playing well until the final whistle, they fell just short, dropping the game by 4 points.
On Tuesday, September 8, the Lady Horns travel to Buena Vista for a matchup against the Lady Longhorns.
Next Friday, varsity Lady Horns, JH and varsity Shorthorns will meet the Bears in Balmorhea with all three teams playing. Pep rally theme: HUNT THE BEARS. Wear: Camo/hunting gear.
