The Alpine City Council will vote today on a resolution “expressing concern” over the plan to build a physical border wall through Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
The resolution is part of the agenda for the regular meeting of the Alpine City Council, starting tonight at 5:30 p.m.
According to documents provided online, the resolution expresses “concern regarding proposed construction of a physical border wall in the Big Bend region and affirming the importance of the Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park to the region’s economic, environmental, and cultural well-being.”
If passed, the resolution would call on “federal decision-makers” to:
- Consider environmental, cultural, and recreational consequences.
- Preserve public access to the Rio Grande and surrounding lands where feasible.
- Protect dark sky resources and wildlife corridors.
- And engage with local governments, tribal entities, land managers, and regional stakeholders prior to finalizing any construction plans.
Passage of the resolution would authorize Mayor Catherine Eaves to send the resolution containing their requests and concerns to President Donald Trump, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, the Texas Congressional Delegation, Gov. Greg Abbott, “relevant federal and state agencies, and other appropriate officials.”
The resolution adds that the Alpine City Council would support the “exploration of border security measures” that are effective but minimize adverse impacts on the region.
