Stephen McCanless will begin his tenure as Marfa ISD’s new superintendent on August 10, according to MISD Board of Trustees President Philip Boyd. McCanless was unanimously hired by the School Board at a special meeting on Saturday, August 1, after a mandatory 21-day waiting period. The board first announced their intention to hire McCanless in July.
McCanless most recently served as superintendent of Cleveland ISD, north of Houston.
“The excitement I have about joining Marfa ISD and becoming a Shorthorn is a true blessing,” McCanless said in a previous statement. “To not only be in a part of Texas I have loved for most of my life, but to now be a part of the best little district in Texas with the most amazing students, staff and parents motivates me to give Marfa ISD my best! Shorthorns, fasten your seatbelts, it’s about to get exciting.”
Saturday’s School Board agenda also contained action items regarding the board’s Place 4 and Place 5 seats, recently resigned by Rene Gonzales and Boyd. There were, however, no letters of interest turned in to Boyd by July 30, and those seats remain open. The board will continue to accept letters until the seats are filled.
Interested parties that meet the criteria must hand deliver a letter to the Marfa ISD Superintendent Office c/o Mr. Boyd and the Marfa ISD Board of Trustees at 400 W. Lincoln St. in Marfa. The next scheduled regular School Board meeting is Monday, August 17.
